Day in the Life: HVAC Technician

HVAC technicians install and maintain heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. Some HVAC technicians also specialize in refrigeration repair and are then called HVACR technicians.

On an average day, HVAC technicians can do a variety of different things and may end up in several different places. HVAC technicians work with many people throughout their day and may repair or install systems in businesses, factories and private homes.

HVAC technicians could start their day responding to a call in a residential neighborhood with a burnt-out refrigerator and end up at a factory fixing an unruly air conditioning system. The great thing about a career as an HVAC technician is that each day brings new and exciting tasks. You're not stuck doing the same tedious thing. HVAC technicians attend to problems in various locations and work with many different people on a daily basis.

In addition to fixing problem equipment, HVAC technicians also install new equipment for homes and businesses and test the equipment to ensure proper performance and safety. HVAC technicians also regularly test and check equipment that has been installed to make sure it is up to safety codes and regulations.

HVAC technicians are an important aspect to the comfortable living standards many people have become accustom to. Even more important are the air conditioning and refrigeration systems that help keep food, liquids and medicine fresh and available.

HVAC technicians must be able to read and understand complicated designs to instructions and equipment. HVAC technicians must be technically minded and analytical. They must be problem solvers and have a go-with-the-flow kind of attitude. HVAC technicians must be flexible, as they usually don't know what the day will bring. They must also have good communication skills as they are constantly working with clients and other technicians.
