Becoming an Electrician

The construction world has many facets to its industry. Electricians have played a major part in the creation and maintenance of buildings for the past millennium and due to the world’s reliance on electrical power its importance continues to grow. Their work can range from the fairly simple (like installing new lighting) to the more complex (like repairing generators or industrial robots). Regardless, their skills all center around electrical components that help to make the modern world run fluidly.

Many electricians begin their careers taking up apprenticeship programs that combine on-the-job training with classroom sessions. Their learning period can include almost 150 hours worth of classroom work and over 2,000 hours of hands-on training instruction. Because there are so many different types of components and procedures in the electrical field a student will usually take up to 4 years to complete their training.

The electrical profession holds an importance in our modern lifestyle. Due to such a heavy reliance, electricians must continually learn to keep up with changes to the industry by learning how to install, maintain and repair new systems that are invented. To make sure that they get an up-to-date education students are enrolling in vocational / trade schools before they take on an apprenticeship. This allows them to begin their base knowledge by learning about the most recent practices and technology in the field so that they are better prepared when they begin their hands-on training. It should be noted that employers are more likely to hire applicants who have a formal education background because of their more extensive knowledge.

Electricians must learn a combination of mathematics, blueprint readings, electrical theory and all of the electrical code requirements as well as safety practices. Many of them can choose to become specialized in a specific area such as industrial electricity, fire alarm systems, or communications, which is a particularly fast-growing industry due to its work with computer systems.

Before graduates can become fully certified to work they must pass state-issued examinations to become legally licensed to practice. These tests vary by state but most of them discern one’s knowledge of federal / state electrical and building codes as well as general knowledge of electrical theory. In order to become a master electrician most states require workers to have at least 7 years experience or have earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.

As one continues through their career in this field they can attempt to advance to higher positions as construction supervisors or project managers. Those who continue to update their knowledge through continuing education courses stand to favor better in the industry by keeping up-to-date on any changes made. Job prospects are expected to be good for students who go into their genre of work. In fact, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that opportunities should increase by 12% in the next 8 years.

Hard work is known to pay off in the labor field. If one chooses to stay dedicated to their craft and willing to keep up with technological advancements that arise they can expect to have quite a lucrative career.
